Welcome to the Whizz Kids class page. The Whizz Kids are taught by Mrs Lewins and our Teaching Assistants are Mrs Clarke and Miss Parkin. Miss Parkin supports us mostly in our maths learning. If there is anything you would like to discuss, or you’re not sure about, please pop and see me or email:

Our Twitter Page is updated several times per week. This is a good place to keep up-to-date on what the Whizz Kids are up to! Please follow us at: @y6kingedprimary

Important Information

Swimming: Whizz Kids will go swimming every Friday morning up until Christmas Break. We leave for swimming at 8:30 so children need to arrive by 8:20 so we can get registered. Our swimming will take place at Armthorpe Leisure Centre.

Out of School Visit: Whizz Kids will be visiting Eden Camp on Monday 4th October. This will develop our knowledge further of World War 2.

PE: Our Sports Coach PE lesson will be on a Thursday (1:30 - 2:15). Children are welcome to come to school in their PE kits and will not be required to bring their uniform to change into after as PE is close to the end of the day.

Reading: As I know you are all aware, reading daily is crucial. We expect children to read each night for at least 10 minutes. We understand children do have other commitments and this may not be possible every night but if we can encourage it as much as possible. Please sign your child’s reading record once they have read.

Times Tables: Having rapid recall of times tables and the corresponding division facts is so important and will help your child with all areas of their maths learning. We practise times tables frequently in school but we ask your child to practise at home too. Log in details for Times Table Rockstars will be sent out and we ask your child to spend 10 minutes at least 3 times per week.

Just a reminder: Year 6 should arrive at school by 8:40. They have morning challenges to do and the idea is they are completed by 9:00am so we can then start lessons. Please can I ask for your support in ensuring your child arrives at school for 8:40.

Curriculum Information for Autumn 1: World War 2 and Windrush

Our topic for this term links to World War 2, which is always a favourite with the children (and staff!) We will learn about The Blitz, evacuation, the Jewish children and how lives were affected. We will also learn about The Windrush, considering how Britain changed due to World War 2 and the immigration from Caribbean countries. We will read (and watch) Goodnight Mister Tom. This is my favourite novel to share with children so I am so excited to read this. We will also read The Windrush Child, which I read over the Summer and really enjoyed.

In maths, we will focus on times tables, place value, rounding, ordering, addition and subtraction. Alongside skills building in maths, we will do some problem solving.
Other areas of the curriculum focus:

Science: Properties of materials
PSHE: Being in my world and Celebrating Differences
RE: Prayer and Worship (Hinduism) and Christmas (Christianity)
PE: Swimming, football, netball and gymnastics
Art: Artist: Sonia Delauney
DT: Programming
Music: Classroom Jazz
Computing: E-safety and Coding
French: Pets and Shopping

I have also attached our Long Term Plan so you can see what learning is coming in other terms. I hope you find all this information useful. Please do let me know if I can support in any way.
