Curriculum Information: Coal Mining in Doncaster
Our topic this half term is all about mining in the local area. We are sure the children will love this topic. As Thornewas once a mining town, we are sure some older family members may be able to share experiences with yourchild. Please encourage them to do so! The children will visit the National Coal Mining Museum, which we’re surewill be an invaluable experience for your child. In Literacy and reading sessions, we are reading a Louis Sachar book called Holes. This is a fantastic book, which we’re sure the children will really enjoy. Reading at home is crucial and reading with your child is particularly important. Please make time to share a book with your child at the very least 3 times per week. Our maths lessons this half-term will begin with a focus on number. More specifically, the first few weeks will see the children work on their place value knowledge and understanding. We will continue to practise number facts every day and it would be really helpful if you can encourage times tables practise at home. Thanks in advance for your support.
We are very lucky to have fully qualified Sports Coaches working in school this year. One of our PE sessions will be run by a qualified sports coach; this session will be on a Tuesday afternoon. Our second PE session will be on a Wednesday afternoon. Some of these sessions will take place outside so it is very important your child brings an indoor kit and a kit that would be suitable for the interchanging weather. Please ensure your child has appropriate footwear for outdoor PE sessions. The P.E. kit can be brought to school on a Monday and left in the cloakroom all week and taken home on Friday. Children should read as often as possible but a minimum of 3 times per week. This should be written into your child’s diary. This diary should be in school daily.
