Year 5/6 - Wise Owls - Miss Jude
Welcome to the Wise Owls’ class page. The Wise Owls are taught by Miss Jude and our teaching Assistants are Mrs Bisset, Miss Parkin and Mrs Webster. Miss Parkin and Mrs Webster will mostly support us with our maths learning. We also have Miss Sheldon who is our LSA. If there is anything you would like to discuss, or you’re not sure about, please pop and see me or email the year group email: firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com
Curriculum Information: World War 2 and Windrush:
Our topic for this term is World War 2, which is always a favourite with the children (and staff!) We will learn about The Blitz, evacuation, the Jewish children and how lives were affected. We will also learn about The Windrush, considering how Britain changed due to World War 2 and the immigration from Caribbean countries. We will read (and watch) Goodnight Mister Tom. This is a favourite novel to share with children in Year 5/6, so I am excited to read this with them. We will also read The Windrush Child this year. In maths, we will focus on times tables, place value, rounding, ordering, addition and subtraction. Alongside skills building in maths, we will do some problem solving. Other areas of the curriculum focus:
Science: Properties of materials;
PSHE: Being in my world and Celebrating Differences;
RE: Prayer and Worship (Hinduism) and Christmas (Christianity);
PE: Swimming, football, netball and gymnastics;
Art: Artist: Sonia Delauney;
DT: Programming; Music: Classroom Jazz;
Computing: E-safety and Coding and French: Pets and Shopping.
Swimming: starting from Thursday 9th September, Wise Owls will start their swimming lessons. We will go swimming every Thursday morning. Swimming lessons will take place at Armthorpe Leisure Centre.
Out of School Visit: We are hoping to arrange a visit to Eden Camp, to help develop our learning about World War 2. More details will follow about this but we anticipate the cost being around £11. This visit will take place at some point, at the end of September / early October.
PE: Our Sports Coach PE lesson will be on a Monday (2:15 – 3:00pm). Children are welcome to come to school in their PE kits and will not be required to bring their uniform to change into after as PE is at the end of the day.
Reading: As I know you are all aware, reading daily is crucial. We expect children to read each night for at least 10 minutes. We understand children do have other commitments and this may not be possible every night but if we can encourage it as much as possible. Please sign your child’s reading record once they have read.
Times Tables: Having rapid recall of times tables and the corresponding division facts is so important and will help your child with all areas of their maths learning. We practise times tables frequently in school but we ask your child to practise at home too. Log in details for Times Table Rockstars will be sent out and we ask your child to spend 10 minutes at least 3 times per week. Thank you in advance for all your support.
Just a reminder: Year 5 and 6 should arrive at school by 8:40. They have morning challenges to do and the idea is they are completed by 9:00am so we can then start lessons. Please can I ask for your support in ensuring your child arrives at school for 8:40.
Our Twitter Page is updated several times per week. This is a good place to keep up-to-date on what the Wise Owls are up to! Please follow us at: @y6kingedprimary or @y5kingedprimary.
