We’ve a busy and exciting Autumn Term ahead! Our topic this half term is all about mining in the local area. I am sure the children will love this topic. As Thorne was once a mining town, I am sure some older family members may be able to share experiences with your child. Please encourage them to do so!
In Literacy and reading sessions, we are reading a Louis Sachar book called Holes. This is a fantastic book, which I’m sure the children will really enjoy.
Our maths lessons this half-term will begin with a focus on number. More specifically, the first few weeks will see the children work on their place value knowledge and understanding. We will continue to practise number facts every day and it would be really helpful if you can encourage times tables practise at home. The children can continue doing this using Times Table Rockstars and Mathletics. Thanks in advance for this.
We love reading in the Clever Crocs, we will be reading a range of books through the year. We encourage the children to read at home every night, you play an important role in this so please try to listen to your child read and sign their home school book.
P.E. and Swimming
We are very lucky to have fully qualified Sports Coaches working in school this year. Our PE day is on a Thursday morning at 9:00am starting in the second week. Children can come dressed ready for PE on that day; however, please send their uniform to change into after the PE session. For now, all PE sessions will take place outside so it is very important your child brings a kit that would be suitable for the interchanging weather. Please ensure your child has appropriate footwear for outdoor PE sessions. The PE kit will be brought home after PE on Thursday and can be left at home until the following Thursday. We will attempt to take part in the Daily Mile very day so please ensure your child has appropriate footwear (or footwear they can change into).
Swimming will begin in the Spring Term. More details will follow closer to the time.
Home Learning involves a number of different tasks. Please ask if you or your child need any support with these.
How can you help?
- Practise tables with your child,
- Listen to them read regularly and ask them questions about the story and characters- you can find examples of questions to ask on the 'Parents' page.
- Help your child with research on their topic.
- Encourage your child to use Mathletics and check on their progress.
- Check the Home/School diary regularly and sign it.
- Home Learning will be set on a Monday and due in on a Friday. Please encourage your child to complete this with care, so that their work is something that they can feel proud of.
