Autumn Term
It is lovely to welcome the children back to school; I do hope you have all had a fantastic Summer break and a lovely rest!
We’ve a busy and exciting Autumn Term ahead! I am really looking forward to teaching your child this year. Mrs Mosteckyj will be the Teaching Assistant based in the Clever Crocs class and Miss Parkin will be doing some maths support with the class.
If there is anything you would like to discuss, or you’re not sure about, please pop and see me or email:

Curriculum Information: World War 2 and Windrush
Our topic for this term links to World War 2, which is always a favourite with the children (and staff!) We will learn about The Blitz, evacuation, the Jewish children and how lives were affected. We will also learn about The Windrush, considering how Britain changed due to World War 2 and the immigration from Caribbean countries. We will read (and watch) Goodnight Mister Tom. This is my favourite novel to share with children so I am so excited to read this. We will also read The Windrush Child, which I read over the Summer and really enjoyed.
In maths, we will focus on times tables, place value, rounding, ordering, addition and subtraction. Alongside skills building in maths, we will do some problem solving.
Other areas of the curriculum focus:
Science: Properties of materials; PSHE: Being in my world and Celebrating Differences; RE: Prayer and Worship (Hinduism) and Christmas (Christianity) ; PE: Swimming, football, netball and gymnastics; Art: Artist: Sonia Delauney; DT: Programming; Music: Classroom Jazz; Computing: E-safety and Coding and French: Pets and Shopping

We love reading in the Clever Crocs, we will be reading a range of books through the year. We encourage the children to read at home every night, you play an important role in this so please try to listen to your child read and sign their home school book.

Important Information

Swimming: Wise Owls and Whizz Kids are starting swimming next week. We are hoping to start swimming for the Clever Crocs later in the year- more information will follow.

Out of School Visit: We are hoping to arrange a visit to Eden Camp, to help develop our learning about World War 2. More details will follow about this but we anticipate the cost being around £11. This visit will take place at some point, at the end of September / early October.

Hook Session: On the afternoon of Thursday 9th the Clever Crocs will have a session, which will introduce them to their new topic. We will be doing some team building / PE activities. Please can the children come dressed in PE kits or if they wish, they can wear World War 2 clothing.

PE: Our Sports Coach PE lesson will be on a Monday (1:30pm – 2:15pm) and we will have a further PE session on Friday afternoon. Children are welcome to come to school in their PE kits and will not be required to bring their uniform to change into after as PE is at the end of the day.

Reading: As I know you are all aware, reading daily is crucial. We expect children to read each night for at least 10 minutes. We understand children do have other commitments and this may not be possible every night but if we can encourage it as much as possible. Please sign your child’s reading record once they have read.

Times Tables: Having rapid recall of times tables and the corresponding division facts is so important and will help your child with all areas of their maths learning. We practise times tables frequently in school but we ask your child to practise at home too. Log in details for Times Table Rockstars will be sent out and we ask your child to spend 10 minutes at least 3 times per week. Thank you in advance for all your support.

How can you help?

  • Practise tables with your child,
  • Listen to them read regularly and ask them questions about the story and characters- you can find examples of questions to ask on the 'Parents' page.
  • Help your child with research on their topic.
  • Encourage your child to use Mathletics and check on their progress.
  • Check the Home/School diary regularly and sign it.
  • Home Learning will be set on a Monday and due in on a Friday. Please encourage your child to complete this with care, so that their work is something that they can feel proud of.
