Year 5 - Brainy Bugs - Mrs Allsopp/Mrs Parker
Welcome to the Brainy Bugs
The Battle of Britain
Our topic this term is all about the Battle of Britain. One of our favouirte topics becuase there is so much to learn. The children will explore why World War 2 started, who was involved, the Blitz, rationing and how life would have been different if we had lost. The main focus will be 'The Battle of Britain'. It is a very interesting topic and we are sure the children will really enjoy it. As part of our topic, we will be taking the children on a very exciting trip to Eden Camp on Tuesday 12th February, more information will follow. Our Literacy will be linked in with our topic where possible and we will be reading Goodnight Mister Tom. This book is brilliant, set in the middle of World War Two, we are sure the children are going to love reading it and completeing work based on the characters and events. Please encourage you child to research the topic at home, we love to see extra work the children complete.
Our maths lessons this term will begin with a focus on angles. We will also be looking at transformation, fractions, decimals and percentages. We will continue to practise number facts every day and it would be really helpful if you can encourage times tables practise at home. Thanks in advance for this. All children have a Mathletics password. The more they use these the better!
In Science, we will be learning about properties and changes to materials.
Swimming sessions will begin in February. We will send a letter about this in the next few weeks. We will also be having the Big Talk sessions during Spring Term, again a letter will follow.See the school website for details about the class, photos and important dates across the term. You can also follow the school Twitter account @kingedprimary
We are very lucky to have fully qualified Sports Coaches working in school this year. One of our PE sessions will be run by a qualified sports coach; this session will be on a Friday. We will be continuing to take part in the daily mile so it is essential your child has appropriate footwear for this especially in winter months. As always a change of kit including shoes should be left in school for a full week and taken home every Friday.
Children will be sent home with a weekly arithmetic task which is due in on a Friday. We will also be testing children on their spellings on a Friday.Children should read as often as possible but a minimum of 3 times per week. This should be written into your child’s diary which should be in school daily.
Each week attendance figures for every class in the school are shared and displayed for all pupils to see. The two year 5 classes, Bugs and Crocs, compete to see which class has the best weekly attendance. The class with the most weekly wins at the end of term will receive a very special treat!!! Come on Bugs…We can do it!!!!
